Elementary Chinese (CHIN102)
The following content is from the spring semester of 2021.
Chinese is a difficult language, but it is also a fulfilling challenge. Be prepared to dedicate a significant amount of time to vocabulary practice and drilling. Lin 老师 (Teacher Lin) is an excellent professor as well. She accepts print-outs of the Student Activities Manual, so you can save a little money by printing the pages instead of buying the book.
No student enjoys being cold-called, but it's also an invaluable and inevitable part of Chinese class.
The best way to study for exams in the William & Mary Chinese department is to study Language in Use. Additionally, utilize the practice sheets; they're not just homework! Spending time to develop muscle memory when writing out characters can be the make-or-break points on an exam.
Note that each vocabulary set is made from Quizlet. Quizlet has started charging for most of its study features, so I highly recommend converting these sets to Knowt, a free site that deserves our support. It will walk you through the steps of converting the sets to enable the Learn feature, Test feature, and review matching games!
